Our fall attempt at the Finger Lakes  2008

Skydog Report - October 17
th - 19th

Friday October 17, 2008 we had a late start and arrived in Bath NY. about 3 pm and called Scott Wise and decided to check out Hammondsport and found the wind to be to far from the Northeast so of to Mossy Banks we went and the wind was straight into the 400 foot cliff launch. My take off was at 5:07 pm and I immediately soared above the cliff and within five minutes was a about 600 feet above and searched the ridge for thermals and found some nice ones that took me to 1,200 feet above take-off and my flight lasted for one hour and 29 minutes. Scot got off without assistance about twenty minutes after me and had a flight of more that one hour and got up to 1,000 feet over the top in the smooth air and Scott landed on top while I landed at the bottom just after sunset.

Saturday October 18, 2008 we went to Indian Cliffs near Elmira NY. and had a wonderful day of thermalling with about fifteen Hang Gliders and three Paragliders. The conditions were a little strong for the Paras and I found the thermals to be great although I did get slapped once when my wires went slack for a second but as my flight lingered things smoothed out and I got up to 4,555 feet above take-off and my flight lasted four hours and seven minutes and could have been an hour longer but it was supper time for the group of pilots so I landed. In the Landing area there were lots of great stories about some wonderful flying and many pilots had two plus hour flights. Ryan Wood went XC with his paraglider and landed fifteen miles out where he says the clouds stopped producing lift and the Ryan came back for a second flight.

Sunday October 19, 2008 turned out to be another great day at the Cliffs and many pilots had two flights and smooth thermals to about three thousand feet above take-off and as it turned out I took off in a bad cycle and I sunk to the valley in about five minutes and then I watched as lots of pilots thermalled effortlessly above me. Boy was I bummed. The stories as pilots landed told of the smoothest lift they had taken for a long time and I was so envious.
