Skydog Report

Indian Cliffs October 1, to 4, 2010

We drove Thursday evening and woke Friday morning to blue skies and strong NW winds so we hiked and hoped that the wind would slow down later in the day but no luck there as it was still blowing 15 to 20 mph at 6 pm at Hammondsport so we gave up and hoped for better air on Saturday and sure enough another sunny day and the wind was coming from the NE but light so we drove to Indian Cliffs and set up waiting for a good cycle and finally around three pm Florian took off with his paraglider and immediately climbed to over one thousand feet so we all got excited and ready to get off the cliffs. Bill Vickery and then Dan Walter took off and worked at getting up and then another three paragliders took of and slowly climbed out. Then it was my turn so I got on launch and watched the windsock slow down and then pick up a little so I ran off in what turned out to be the end of a great cycle and within seven minutes I was in the Landing area watching as all the others soared at cloudbase except for Ed Jowett who took off after me and survived for about fifteen minutes. A half hour later Scott Wise took off and got to about 1,000 feet above  and stayed aloft for one hour and twelve minutes. All the pilots eventually landed telling me stories about how they could not get down and how smooth the air was near the clouds so I was feeling a lot left out but oh well there will be another day, I Hope.

Sunday dawned sunny again and off to Indian cliffs I went again with Maureen, my wife and our friends, Eric and Mary. We arrived at Indian Cliffs take off to find Bill Vickery already mostly set up and the wind was blowing in pretty good and sometimes from the left at 20 degrees. I set up while Bill went down to get a helmet which he left at home and was able to borrow another from a store at the bottom. Florian and friends showed up with their paragliders and decided not to launch as the wind speed had picked up to about 15 mph on launch. I decided to go first when Florian assured me that I could stay up and sure enough my take - off was out and straight up to about six hundred feet. I cruised the ridge for a while and was happy to be airborne after my poor showing on Saturday. The wind speed seemed to be about twelve to sixteen mph above launch and for the first forty minutes I was considering going down for a landing as the air was very rasty (rough and nasty) but then I saw Bill take off so I thought that I would see how we would do together and I felt better having Bill up there and then Jamie McGuire came up to join us. I was watching the time and figured that the rough air would get better after three pm and the longer I waited the smoother it got. Bill, Jamie and myself thermalled together in the textured air and I got up to 3,700 feet in a good thermal and later Bill said that he got up to 4,100 feet ato. Ed Jowett and then Scott Wise joined me in the air and we all enjoyed some good thermals. Around five o'clock a wonder wind filled in and by moving out in front of the ridge about five hundred feet I found that I could sit at 1,300 feet and I watched as the others all landed and then I thought that I had better get down so that I could break down before dark. My flight time was four hours and twenty minutes and in the end I really enjoyed my flight.

New York August 6, and 7, 2010

We drove to Hammondsport on Thursday evening arriving at 1 am Friday while Patrick, Gilles and Eugene were there on Tuesday and had some sledders except for Eugene who flew Gilles new U-2 for 40 minutes at Dansville. The wind forecast showed WNW so we headed to Harris Hill and arrived by 2 pm and Ed Jowett was setting up so we hurried and got ready. Ed took off first and skied out so I was next and I got good lift up to 3,555 feet and I endured for four hours and 32 minutes watching many others take off and land. The wind shifted from the north for a half hour but straightened out again so all was well in the air. Patrick, Gilles and Eugene had good flights too. Saturday we went to Bristol after a hike at Grimes Glen and when we arrived at Bristol Katrin and Karl were just about to head up to the launch so we followed and when we got to the parking area Karl and a friend offered to carry my glider into launch and I appreciate that so much. I would have had a hard time doing it with Maureen helping. The wind was cycling in and often from the left 20 degrees but Brian took off first and showed us that it was soarable so I got into the air with a bunch of paraglider pilots and Eugene and later Giles and Patrick joined us. I got up to 1,600 feet ato and stayed up for one hour and 13 minutes. Another good day. Checked out Dansville on Sunday and decided to head on home.

New York June 13 - 18, 2010

Our trip started on Sunday the 13th and we stayed until Friday at 3 pm. Arriving late Sunday, Monday dawned cloudy so we did the hiking thing and Maureen and Eric started painting the cabin on top of H-Port. Tuesday dawned bright and sunny so we headed to Indian cliffs with Patrick and although it was a beautiful day there was no lift to be found but Patrick and a few others took sledders. Wednesday was another cloudy day and hiking we did go and biking later at Penn Yan. Thursday started cloudy but the forecast was for partly sunny later in the day so Patrick set up at H-Port and flew the straight in 10 mph breeze and soared for an hour. Around 3 pm I took off and along with Patrick soared the thermals eventually getting up to 5,400 feet. I stayed up for 3 hours and 15 minutes and should have stayed up longer but in one flush cycle I decided to land on top rather than go to the bottom. Oded Kalir and Scott Wise took off at about six pm and had nice soaring flights.

It Turned out to be a wonderful day.

Friday we went to Italy Valley to show Patrick the site and the wind was coming in OK but Patrick decided not to try it and I did not want to fly alone so we went home.

Five Days In the Finger Lakes

We spent five sunny days in the Finger Lakes and had three soarable days in which I logged seven hours of airtime and my highest gain was 5,410 feet above take off at H-Port. We flew Harris Hill one day and that was  a 3 hour and 40 minute flight for me and up to 3,100 feet ato. Lots of pilots were out even though they were all weekdays. I recorded my fastest gain ever of 2,200 feet per minute. Friday Patrick O'Donnell and Gilles Roussel from Ontario joined us and had great flights at Hammondsport, Spring flying was great.
