Green Swamp Challenge Photos & Stories Sunday March 18, 2018

 Sunday March 18, 2018 a foggy morning and Maureen and I are off to Quest Air to get some shots from the Green Swamp Challenge as this will be the first day of competition. We arrived at Quest at 9:30 expecting to get some face shots and that maybe by eleven o'clock we may get some take off shots but we later found that they were starting take offs ay 2 pm and I wanted to fly at Wallaby as my glider is set p there so we got our face shots and went back to Wallaby. I got ready to fly and at 2 pm Mikey Barber was ready so we started a line of eager pilots and Kate from Lookout Mt Tenn. was one of them. The competition pilots would likely be arriving at Wallaby just after three so I was ready with two Gopro cameras on my glider. I was off first with Mikey right behind and then Brian Jackson and a few others. Malcolm suggested that Kate wait until later in the day as it was pretty rowdy at 2:30. The cumulous were abundant and the lift was strong and rasty but I hung on and reached 4,747 feet ato and was getting sucked up hard trying to keep below the base. I did manage to get down to a safe level at 4,200 feet and we all zoomed around near base. I was fortunate enough to film three large birds either mating close by or maybe just being playful. After an hour or so I started to see comp pilots coming from the west along Hyw 33 so I headed west to meet them and the farther I got to the west the more kept coming. I was lucky enough to keep well above them as they were driving hard to get to Wallaby in good time. I was able to get some video of many of the Comp. pilots arriving and landing. After 1 hour and 40 minutes I was whipped and landed and was greeted my more than 20 pilots in the Wallaby Ranch Landing area. It was a great day for the first day of the comp and there were many happy faces at Wallaby Ranch this evening. Maureen captured many landings and Happy Faces Below.
